Know Thy User

Begin with content. Design for simplest context. Make it responsive. Make mockup in markup. Enhance the experience.

I agree with this tweet, but there's something missing from it.

It's the user. It's the audience. It's the target market.

We must not forget our user, for it's the user that forms the foundation from which everything else is built. It really should read like this:

  • Begin with content: You have to know who you're targeting and for what purpose to serve up relevant content.
  • Design for simplest context: You have to know how your site will be used in order to define those contexts.
  • Make it responsive: Maybe. Probably. Is it necessary based on your user base and how they'll use the site?
  • Make mockup in markup: Maybe. In this case, the user is you, so do what you prefer.
  • Enhance the experience: Work the best user experience possible.
It's easy to focus on the trees and miss the forest. Don't forget about your users — know them, and solve their problems through amazing experiences.
